Answer: From time to time, swimmers and their parents come to me and ask what they should do if their club doesn’t allow them to work with outside consultants or private coaches. The reality is, they can’t stop you. This situation is no different than hiring a tutor for school or learning a musical instrument. You are seeking specialized knowledge and skill development that may not be available within your current environment.

Club coaches often don’t have the time or the specific expertise to address every individual need. That’s where outside coaching can play a valuable role. As a swimmer or parent, you absolutely have the right to pursue additional instruction if you feel it will benefit your development.

At the end of the day, if your club cannot offer the same level of individualized attention or specialized technical knowledge, you are fully within your rights to seek that elsewhere. It’s about doing what’s best for your growth as an athlete.
